How is online coaching training going?

For almost seven years, I volunteered as a consultant and instructor at a local suicide prevention hotline. I also host a weekly talk show dedicated to spirituality and well-being. I have interviewed many coaches and formulated many of the basic skills needed for coaching. I even did coaching for shy guys on how to meet the woman of their dreams (and helped many men develop strong relationships with wonderful women), but I lacked the confidence to charge for my coaching services because I had no coaching training experience. That's where Erickson International University came to the rescue. 

So far, I have completed Module 1 of the "Science and Art of Transformational Coaching" and am happy to share my review of the school. If you are planning a coaching career or just want to learn more about what coaching is and how it can benefit you, I hope you will find this article useful.

There are several ways to study at Erickson University: in the training room or online. The International Erickson University of Coaching offers coaching training courses that last several days and are held in the training hall, usually on weekends (from Thursday to Sunday). This fall I was hoping to catch a workshop in Vancouver, but I missed it for just one day! so I decided to try online, so I decided to try the online version.
To be honest, I was worried that an online course would not be as good as a full-time course. I know the type of learning environment that suits me best, and I've tried going through long webinars in the past and found it incredibly draining. I didn't think I could concentrate and study online. However, I didn't want to wait more than six months to start coaching training, so I jumped into the last car and tried. I'm so glad I did it! I haven't attended Erickson University classes in the gym yet, so I can't say exactly what it's like, but I can tell you about some of the benefits of online learning.

The online learning platform they use is called a program (made by Cisco) and is about as close to a "real" audience as you can imagine. There is a whiteboard similar to traditional blackboards, when the time comes and practice what we have learned, small groups are placed in their own "rooms" called "sectional classes".&

Another advantage is that you have 5 weeks to get the information. I like to study at an intensive seminar, but how much of this information will you actually keep? The first part (Module 1) of the training program for coaches in the gym is 32 hours ... this is 32 hours of training for 4 days. You get A LOT of information, but how much of it will remain in the long run? I really enjoyed thinking about what I learned and practicing it for a week; it certainly helps to keep the momentum going for a longer period of time.

I was also very lucky that my training group was SO AMAZING. We immediately had a mutual understanding, and everyone was very friendly and supportive. An old friend of mine died during the course. I am grateful that I had the support of wonderful people in my class. And I'm also happy to say that it was such a rewarding learning experience - something I did in every lesson. I missed only one hour in the evening of my friend's memorial service. It was very nice to know that I had a group of assistants who took a seat and waited for me after I left the wake. 

My teachers, Kim and Patricia, were great. The assistant, Chris, was also very helpful. Anyone who completes the entire program (BAX Modules) can apply for the status of a teaching assistant, which is a great way to develop your skills by helping to teach others.

Now you may be wondering what I learned in Module 1. First of all, let me move on to the type of training I received. The science and art of transformational coaching includes 5 modules. Module IV gives you the Erikson certificate (Erikson's Professional trainer), and as a result of training in module V, you go through the ACC certificate procedure through the International Coaching Federation (ICF). It depends on where you live, but in Canada you don't need a special license or training to call yourself a coach. The ICF is an internationally recognized coaching organization that provides its members with certain training standards and offers them ethical principles. I feel like this is really important because personally I was "coached" by people who claim to be coaches, and I found that they really had no idea what they were doing. Not only is coaching with someone who is not qualified unconditionally a waste of time and money, but in my experience it can have other consequences. It was VERY upsetting when the coaching you receive is controversial and based on advice (especially if the person wasn't qualified or experienced enough to give business recommendations). Therefore, if you plan to hire a coach, make sure that he is a member of the ICF, and he will have a certain level of training and understanding of ethical boundaries.

If you are planning to take coaching training, it is also worth making sure that the course you are looking for is accredited by the ICF. You do not need to be certified by the ICF to conduct coaching, and there are good coaches who are not certified by the ICF, but if certification is important to you, I also recommend that you carefully look at what level of accreditation the ICF course has. One course I was looking for cost about $3,000, and the teacher said the course was accredited by the ICF. This is true, and I'm sure the training was excellent, but the certification was at the level of Continuing Coaching Education (CCE). 

In my understanding, such training is specifically designed for people who have already been trained as coaches and want to acquire new skills that they can add to their practice. The CCE level is not designed to give you basic coaching skills if you don't already have them. what is valuable is that completing a CCE level course will allow you to become an ICF MEMBER, which is valuable, but will not give you ICF CERTIFICATION. If certification is important to you when you are researching your school, take a look at the ICF website and see:
1. Does the school have accreditation,
2. At what level is the school accredited,
3. Which course will entitle you to the certification level you want.

If you're wondering what I found out, your wait is over... In the module I studied the basics of coaching. With my experience in crisis counseling, a lot of this was an overview for me, but it was a good way to channel my skills into a more solution-focused mode rather than crisis counseling. Erickson coaching is very solution-oriented, and coaches work on the assumption that clients can find their own solutions through coaching (and not through advice!), that everyone does their best based on what knowledge and resources they have, and that people make choices based on what, in their opinion, is the best available option at this time. When you can believe that your clients (or even your loved ones) have the wisdom to find their own solutions, it opens up a whole new conversation. Have you ever needed to take something off your mind, and the person you were talking to started giving you unsolicited advice? How does it feel for you? If you're anything like me, it's probably incredibly annoying and frustrating. Do you think this has opened up solutions and new ideas for you, or has it become even harder for you to think clearly? With a solution-oriented coaching model, you learn to ask really great questions that allow people to access their own creative solutions and problem-solving abilities.

Firstly, we were taught the basics of mutual understanding (rapport) and active listening skills, which I had already learned at the crisis counseling training (but I really learned a new way of looking at active listening, and it's always useful to have a little overview). Mutual understanding and active listening skills are the two most important skills for a good coach, manager, salesperson, or even success in social situations. These skills are great for helping your friends discuss their problems or for parents who want to guide their children by giving them a space for free sharing.
